Alan C. Prather Kent State MMME Graduate

In 1992, Alan began teaching instrumental music at the high school and middle school levels. Then in 1999 he auditioned for “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C. Today, he is the leader of the White House Dance Band, which is most often featured as the entertainment following White House state dinners.

Knowing that he needed the flexibility of an online degree, but didn’t want to sacrifice the quality of the education, Alan chose to pursue his master’s in music education from Kent State University.

Lynell Bright Kent State MMME Graduate

Lynell has been the choir director for the Kamehameha Schools Children’s Chorus since 1989 in Honolulu. The performance highlights for her children’s chorus include Good Morning America’s Christmas TV special, “Silent Night Around the World,” two concert appearances with Celine Dion and the world premiere of Disney’s “Lilo and Stitch.” She frequently travels the world with the chorus to places such as Los Angeles, New York City, New Zealand, Tokyo and Washington, D.C.

When it came time to pursue her master’s in music education, Lynell’s schedule demanded a 100 percent online program and a curriculum that was applicable to her teaching. She said the program’s practical nature and the reasonable tuition were key factors in her choice to enroll with Kent State University.

John Owens Kent State MMME Graduate

As a former director of instrumental music and percussion at the high school level and adjunct faculty member at Coconino College in Page, Arizona, John is an experienced educator, arranger and performer. In fact, he has performed in more than 25 countries and written 54 works for various percussion ensembles.

He selected Kent State for the rigorous curriculum and found it directly applicable to his teaching practices as a high school and college teacher. He said he was especially impressed by the focus on technology and diversity in music education. His experiences in the master’s program, combined with his own experiences as a music director, have led John to now pursue a Ph.D. in music education from Kent State. His goal is to give back to the profession by teaching music educators.
